The Ladders: The Perfect Post-Interview Voicemail →
Here’s another good article from The Ladders for you job-seeking postgrads. There is nothing worse than having to follow up an interview. You have to decide whether to call, e-mail or send a thank-you card. Ugh. The most awkward is leaving a voicemail. Though you’re expecting it, there’s something about the beep that throws you off guard—and you end up rambling or talking...

The Ladders: How to Answer the ‘Tell Me About... →
Hey Postgrads!  As lame as you might think interview-coaching sites may be, the advice on this one is pretty solid. This question always gets me because I never know where to start. The Ladder tells us: Nancy Fox, of Fox Coaching Associates… recommends starting with your most recent employment and explaining why you are well qualified for the position. According to Fox, the key to all...

Feck! I've Been Up to Ninety Lately!
You’re probably wondering “What are ye at?” Well, I’ve been running around like a blue-arsed fly trying to get ready for Christmas in Co. Clare. I leave in a few hours and it’ll be a gas craic, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to fit all the gifts on the train! I have a rake of ‘em! Regardless, the holidays are sure to be filled with lots of fun....

The frustration of no longer being a minorty
Yeah, you read that correctly. I grew up in South Carolina as a Muslim Indian girl. South Carolina. You know, the state that still flies the confederate flag on State House grounds (it was moved from the top in 2000, yay progress!). No, I’ve never been a victim of a hate crime or anything like that. I’ve had a pretty comfortable upbringing in my suburban middle-class neighborhood....

“Teacher. In Turkey, Christmas is wrong.”
– My student, after I presented a worksheet with Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree lyrics. I am beginning to understand my students’ reluctance to attend our English Conversation Club’s Christmas Party. Today has been a hard day of clashing perspectives. -Tas

katherinecalledkatie asked: This one's for CKB. Hi, this is Katie (Jen's older sister). As a fellow graphic designer, I'd love to know what camera/lens(es) you use to take pictures of your work. I can't quite seem to get shots with the kind of focus yours have. Any tips would be much appreciated! On another related note, I'm currently in grad school AND teaching at a university...talk about a PGL...

5 things to get a postgrad for the holidays
1. An external hard-drive- because we were too lazy/poor to get one before and now we need somewhere to store our nostalgic memories of undergrad. 2. Money-  because we are jobless adults. And no, not another freaking gift card. 3. A nice piece of clothing- because we can’t dress like ourselves for a crappy job interview. 4. A rolling suitcase- because a backpacking pack doesn’t quite match...

Today I really felt like a teacher.
There was this moment where I was talking to a colleague outside my classroom and then I walked in, shut the door and all the students were silent and waiting for class to start. simple. but really satisfying.  Also, one of my students gave me an apple! -Tas
