four ex-students avoiding the real world

Where’s Waldo? Or ‘Where’s Wally’? (as they so delightfully and wrongly call it here in Northern Euroland. Personal opinion here). I can tell you where he is…out of work! I’ve been talking to a lot of postgraduate friends lately, and we’re still all in the same icky quagmire of unemployment.
I’ve come to find in my recent job searches that 20 somethings today are either:
1. Considered not qualified enough despite their advanced degrees & multiple internships (aka. you need 5 years of experience in a similar field. Funny…because no one will even give me 1 year’s experience).
2. Considered over qualified because of their advanced degrees & multiple internships (this really happens. A lot).
Sometimes, there is just reason to the madness! Thus, we find ourselves working at fast-food counters, moving in with our parents, applying for graduate schools to avoid the real world, taking fellowships in Turkey, hastily moving away to Ireland, hoping that NYC will hold the answers, and working for nothing all in the name of ‘experience’.
Despite all our actions & attempts to figure this craziness out, most of our parents still don’t understand that we’re not living in the same world they were when they graduated college. Things are different and we have to approach the job market differently. Sometimes you’ve got to scrub the floors before they’ll let you be CEO.
Welcome to PGL in the 21st Century. Bitter much?
And I’m done with my Thursday rant.
