Here’s a short video of the Brandcenter Orientation last week. Or was it two weeks ago…

Time is flying by here! Tons of assignments and social events and drinks and assignments and group meetings and assignments. Did I mention assignments?

Pay special attention to how intimidating the professors seem.
It’s a big theme over here at Brandcenter.

Also, see if you can spot me at 00:24, and go ahead and swoon at my roommate’s cameo at 00:34

I’m posting this to prove to my parents that my room is occasionally clean. At least long enough for me to take a picture.

For the past two weeks (aka, the two weeks before classes started), the Art Direction class participated in a 2-week boot camp. We brushed up on our Creative Suite skills in the morning, and were tested in our typography and design skills at night.

Above is the progression of my designs for the boot camp class (assignments detailed below). Hopefully they’re a good illustration of how critiques can change (for better or worse) your ideas and processes.

Day 1: Choose 3 movies out of 7 listed, and design a movie poster focusing on choosing the right typography for that film/audience, incorporating a designated quote from the movie.

Day 2: After Day 1’s critique, refine your best ideas.
It’s worth noting, that during this critique, several people pointed out the flaws in the perspective of the yellow brick road. By the time a 4th person brought it up, I absolutely flipped and said “I didn’t have time to do FUCKING EVERYTHING!” I made a lot of friends that day. That’s not sarcasm.

Day 3: Refine those ideas and bring a final poster for critique.

Day After Boot Camp’s Over And Yours Sucked So You Still Want To Do Better: Refine it for yourself…and your pride…and your blog.

Starting grad school has seriously been a nonstop event. From a 2-week boot camp to multiple theme parties to orientation to the first day of class, I’ve heard a lot of people (peers and professors alike) warn me about building a thick skin. Because, well, you need it. Because, well, they’re going to rip us apart.
Above is a quote from orientation that I predict I’ll find myself referring to when I’m on the brink of a breakdown. So, probably every other day.

So it’s been exactly a week since I’ve moved to Richmond, and I’m in the midst of making friends, decorating my place, and really just making myself at home here.

I’m so pumped about  my new digs! Old hardwood floors, high windows, high ceilings, a really cool old-ass fireplace in my bedroom! It’s all coming together so nicely and I feel so grown up and ready to conquer the hell that is about to be my workload at the Brandcenter.

We have our first boot camp workshop tonight (and an unofficial pre-boot camp bonanza beforehand). We’ll see how that goes!

So A LOT has been happening in my life. Including leaving a wonderful, old one behind and starting and exciting, new one. (more on this later!)

I was so lucky that my last weekend in SC, the stars aligned in some freakish way, and ALL THE PGL GIRLS WERE REUNITED for my going away party.

And it was glorious. And we were weird.

I have a feeling I’ll be making a lot of meta ToDo lists in grad school.
